Angel Biscuits

Angel biscuits are a Southern classic, loved for their tender, cloud-like crumb and flaky layers. They’re yeast-leavened like rolls but also use baking powder and baking soda for extra lift, so they’re practically impossible to mess up.

Ingredients

Prep Time: 20 minutes + 1 hour rise
Bake Time: 12–15 minutes

  • 1 package (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening, cold
  • 2 cups buttermilk, cold
